When it comes to caring for your teeth and gums, regular brushing is sometimes not enough. Your toothbrush cannot always clean the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth. The bristles cannot always get into the small grooves and surfaces of your teeth where food can become stuck. If left untreated, these areas can easily decay.

A dental sealant is a thin, plastic coating applied to the chewing surface of molars, premolars and any deep grooves of teeth. More than 75 percent of dental decay begins in these deep grooves. Sealants protect the depressions and grooves of your teeth from food particles and plaque that brushing and flossing can't reach. A sealant also creates a smooth, easy-to-clean surface.

By preventing food and plaque from becoming stuck in your teeth, the risk of developing cavities is significantly reduced. This end-result may be less tooth decay, fewer cavities and dental restorations. Since teeth sealants are designed with cavity prevention in mind, it may be less expensive (and less stressful) in the long run to get your child sealants rather than risk fillings down the line.

There are benefits to dental sealants, no matter how old you are. According to the American Dental Association, using sealants over a four-year period reduced the risk of cavities by 58 percent.

Candidates for sealants:

  • Children and teenagers - When the first permanent teeth appear or anytime between the ages of 6-16 years old when children's teeth are cavity-prone.
  • Adults - Tooth surfaces without decay that have deep grooves or depressions.
  • Baby teeth - Occasionally done if teeth have deep grooves or depressions and child is cavity prone.

Sealed teeth require the same conscientious dental hygiene as unsealed teeth. You and your child should continue brushing and flossing regularly and have regularly scheduled professional cleanings.

What our patients say

I have been going to Dental Care of Texas for a little over a year now, and I love it. They get you back and all fixed up in a jiffy. I am currently in ortho too and they are getting my teeth exactly where I want them to be. The prices are great and the staff are the best. I would and do recommend Dental Care of Texas to everyone I know.

I have nothing but great things to say about Dental Care of Texas. Definitely most affordable around the area, and also have payment plans that help single moms like myself. Staff is always nice and very helpful. I have another kid that's going to need braces soon and I will be returning to Dental Care of Texas, without a doubt.

Been with this dentist office for 18 years! This office has not much of a turnover, and that says a lot; mostly same staff for years. The front office staff has been very helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to scheduling my appointments or working with my insurance, and I know I can trust the care I receive from their hygienists and dentists. All of that is really just a bonus to the awesome convenience of being able to go in on a Saturday!
